There is an ancient quote that states, “walking is man’s best medicine.” Simply articulated, the truthfulness of this statement is profound as research shows that walking is an excellent exercise for numerous reasons.
It is widely known that walking increases heart and lung fitness, helps to manage hypertension, high cholesterol and diabetes, relieves muscular discomforts, builds stronger bones, and improves balance. Amazingly, walking also impedes the aging process.
Aging is a normal process in the human experience, and in today’s world there are an abundance of practices being endorsed to help the body maintain its youthfulness and vitality. According to an article in US Magazine, a key in maintaining longevity is having strong leg muscles. Alarmingly, a study from the University of Copenhagen in Denmark reports that during two weeks of inactivity, leg muscle strength is weakened equivalent to 20-30 years of aging.
The legs and feet bear the weight of the human body, and 50% of the human body’s bones and muscles are found in the legs, and 50% of the body’s nerves, blood vessels with blood flow are in both legs. Consistent leg activity is very instrumental in keeping the legs strong and healthy.

Exercise is essential to good health, walking 30 – 40 minutes a day guarantees optimal leg wellness. In a society with a multitude of exercise options, walking may not be a choice for many. However, a slight adjustment in mindset can accommodate this game-changing activity. Instead of driving to places in your neighborhood for light shopping, visiting, going to work, etc., consider making a trek to these destinations.
Invest in a good pair of walking shoes, and encourage others to walk too. Walk around your neighborhood, or go to the nearest track and walk laps. Walking in nature has a multitude of benefits not just for physical health, but also serves as a way to meditate and connect with the other Creations adding to positive mental, emotional and spiritual health

To be effective, walking only requires consistency and intention. It is important for the mind to acknowledge that walking is good sending electrical charges throughout the body that are converted into chemical signals that are beneficial.
Just like an apple a day keeps the doctor away, walking is a simple yet extraordinary practice to maintain and improve our overall health, and a gateway to youthfulness and longevity.
