Connecting with Herbs in our Environment

Toveet Israel24 January 20244 min read

In the Village of Peace Dimona, we understand that true wellness flourishes when we live in harmony with our environment. The abundant herbs surrounding us are profound blessings from the Most High, offering an assortment of life-giving properties and usages. From ancient times, these seed-bearing plants – their leaves, fruits, stems, bark, oils, and roots – have been cherished for their culinary and medicinal gifts.

Why Our Connection to Herbs Matters

As human beings, discovering our deep connection with the herbs in our environment is vital, for all of creation is interconnected. These living organisms draw us to them through their physical beauty, aromatic fragrances, unique flavours, and the powerful ability to restore health and rejuvenation. We believe that supreme creative intelligence has thoughtfully provided everything we need to sustain ourselves right at our fingertips.

As master herbalist Niki Senior shares in her work, "By using herbs to heal, the very plants we walk alongside on the earth, we not only create empowerment within ourselves, but also identify and connect with dis-ease, allow it a swifter passage for greater healing to be made." Nurturing our relationship with these plants is deeply fulfilling and empowering. It enhances our culinary skills and equips us with knowledge to address various physical ailments and mental or emotional discomforts.

Herbs Abound in the Holy Land

Here in the Holy Land, fresh herbs are a common sight, readily available in vibrant outdoor markets and local supermarkets. These natural wonders also grow wild throughout the country's terrain – along roadsides, sidewalks, and in personal gardens. The land itself is a testament to the Creator's generosity, offering a diverse array of indigenous herbs.

Consider just a few of the many blessings found here: rosemary, aloe vera, sage, wormwood, nettle, dodder seed, spearmint, peppermint, milk thistle, ashwagandha, parsley, fresh coriander, dandelion, bitter lettuce, and broadleaf plantain.

For example, while rosemary is a beloved flavour enhancer for sauces, roasted vegetables, and rice dishes, its medicinal properties are equally impressive. It acts as a natural antibiotic, aids digestion, promotes hair growth, improves circulation, and helps restore memory. It is common to see people throughout the Holy Land enjoying a cup of hot water with a steeping sprig of fresh rosemary.

Wormwood tea is also a popular remedy, known for its ability to rid the body of intestinal parasites and offer other important medicinal values. Dandelion leaves are often added to salads, strengthening the immune system and supporting liver health. Fresh mints are cherished for freshening breath, aiding indigestion, and relieving stress. All these herbs have been naturally and conveniently placed here for the enjoyment and aid of the inhabitants.

Living the Herbal Way in the Village of Peace

In the Village of Peace Dimona, our community members live by the ultimate ancient food guide, which affirms that every seed-bearing plant, herb, and fruit tree is a green light for consumption. Our village is a living testament to this principle, home to an impressive array of herbs. A walk through our community often reveals locals gathering handfuls for cooking, steeping tasty teas, or even crafting homemade hair and skin products – a beautiful reminder that nature provides all we truly need.

We are inspired by our youth, like Yahletahl Baht Ayleenaton (25) and Yoshavyah Ben Ayleenaton (22), who grew up immersed in this wisdom. Their father, a revered herbalist and agriculturalist, instilled in them a deep respect for the healing properties of plants. Today, they honour his legacy by incorporating herbs into their daily self-care routines, showcasing the timeless wisdom passed down through generations.

Yahletahl and Yoshavyah commonly use fresh and dried herbs such as nettle, aloe vera, dodder seed, broadleaf plantain, mint, and rosemary. They transform these gifts into nourishing teas, medicinal treatments, and preventative maintenance regimes. These young individuals embody the truth that youth live what they learn, demonstrating that herbs have a vital place in everyone’s life in the Village of Peace as we collectively strive to Master the Art of Living.

Establishing this profound herb-human connection is an endeavor truly worth engaging in. When we observe, research, and respectfully interact with what Mother Earth has provided, we embark on a journey to connect with plant life and receive the life-giving sustenance that herbs were created to give. We invite you to explore the herbal wonders around you and deepen your own connection to nature's profound wisdom.
