Water as Medicine: Returning to Life’s Most Essential Resource

Sgan Yahgdeer11 October 20268 min read

In the Village of Peace Dimona, we have honoured water as one of our foundational medicines for more than five decades. Discover how this simple daily practice supports the body, the mind and a life lived in harmony with nature.

Water: The Quiet Power That Sustains Every Cell

There are some truths so close to us that we stop seeing them. Water is one of them. It waits at the tap. It fills the glass. It falls from the sky and moves beneath the earth. We drink it almost without thought, yet every day the body depends upon it to continue its quiet and extraordinary work.

For 50 plus years, our community in Dimona has been engaged in the daily, purposeful work of Mastering the Art of Living. Among the many treasures we have carried out of the Negev Desert, few are as humble, or as powerful, as our relationship with water. In the Village of Peace, we count water among our five foundational medicines, alongside food, rest, exercise and cleanliness. It is not an afterthought to a meal. It is medicine (video on YouTube) in its own right.

The Body Remembers Water

The human body is largely water, the human body needs water. The "contract" non-negotiable. Every process within it depends on that supply being refreshed. Our experience has shown that many of the discomforts people accept as normal are, quite simply, the body calling for water. Tiredness, headaches, sluggish thinking, irritability: so often the body is not asking for another coffee or another stimulant or another snack. It is asking for the most abundant substance it contains.

When we drink water generously and consistently, we support digestion, circulation, temperature regulation, healthy skin and proper joint function and the mind. When we neglect it, the body quietly compensates, and over the years that compensation takes its toll.

How We Practise Water as Medicine

In our community, we have developed simple practices around water that we follow faithfully, day after day, decade after decade.

Begin the day with water. Our water practice begins in the morning when we awaken. Right after brushing our teeth, and before anything else, we drink water. Room temperature, plain or with addition of some fresh squeezed lemon juice to aid in alkalizing the body. After hours of rest from the night before, the body is ready to receive it, and beginning the day this way sets a tone of care for the vessel we live in. Plus, we find it creates an easier transition for the stomach, going from a "fasting state" to "breaking the fast (breakfast)."

Keep eating and drinking separate. This is one of the most distinctive of our practices. We have found that separating our water intake from our meals supports digestion and allows the body to make full use of both the food and the water - or any liquid, for that matter. If we have consumed water, we generally wait 30 minutes before eating solid food. If we have just consumed water, we wait 30 minutes after we drank, to eat. We couple this discipline with trying to practice mindful eating in-general. It takes a little adjusting to, but our experience over five decades has convinced us of its worth.

Choose water over everything else. Soft drinks, sugary beverages and excessive stimulants have no place in our homes. Water is the drink of life, and it costs almost nothing.

Stay hydrated throughout the day. Carrying a water bottle (instead of a cup of coffee) is a great practice for staying hydrated. The "science" continually changes as to how much each individual should drink, taking into account, age, diet, general health and gender. But one rule of thumb seems consistent, don't wait until you feel thirsty. When we remember that our bodies are 70% water, and keep in mind, that daily tasks cause our bodies to pull on that water, keeping a healthy level should eventually become intentional maintenance.

✦

Water is Also Food

Water is also food. We drink water, but we also eat it - a fact that more people are beginning to understand. In fact, there is a beautiful lesson hidden in the way nature provides hydration.

Many fruits and vegetables contribute water to the diet, a fact recognised in public-health hydration guidance. A fruit taken from the earth is not merely carbohydrate, fibre, vitamins and minerals classified on a nutritional chart. It is also part of nature's delivery system for water. Seen this way, hydration and nourishment are not separate ideas. They belong to the same conversation between the body and the earth.

But water does not work alone. It works hand in hand with our plant-based live-it, which draws its nourishment from the earth in its natural state. Again, fruits and vegetables carry water within them, and when the body is fed this way, every glass we drink goes further.

We have found that a person eating close to the earth and drinking water freely enjoys a clarity and lightness that no supplement can imitate. This is not theory for us. It is the lived experience of multiple generations, from our elders in their nineties to our children growing up in Dimona today.

What the Ancients Saw in Water

Ancient peoples built their civilisations around water sources long before modern physiology described water's role in the human body. This was practical before it was symbolic. Having lived, and thrived as long as we have in the Negev desert of Israel, we can speak to it directly.

Across ancient traditions, practical dependence upon water also found expression in spirituality, mythology and ritual. Historical accounts describe water appearing in themes of creation, purification, renewal and transition. These are cultural and spiritual meanings, often not medical claims, but they reveal something important about the human ability to discern: people understood that water did more than satisfy thirst. It stood at the boundary between barrenness and abundance, impurity and cleansing, ending and renewing.

The symbolism is not difficult to understand. Consider the journey contained within it. The rain, river and soil. The plant and the body... critical relationships highlighting the life giving and life sustaining power of water. The generations before us understood that wherever water moves, life has the possibility to rise.

In Our Community, We Have Found

In our community, the glass of water that begins the day belongs to something larger, it is remembrance. It is a remembrance of how vital, simple acts of self love and self maintenance can be. When someone begins each day with water, keeps it apart from meals, and drinks it generously throughout the day, the changes arrive quietly: steadier energy, clearer skin, better rest, a calmer mind. None of it is dramatic. All of it is cumulative.

And we have found that water is the most overlooked of all the medicines, and perhaps the most forgiving. It requires no skill, no equipment and no expense. What it asks for is consistency and respect. It rewards the patient. That is the truest character of natural law.

We have also found that water teaches a posture toward life. It says that caring for the body should begin before the demands of the world arrive. It says that health can be practised, not merely pursued when it has been lost.

And it reminds us that Mastering the Art of Living is often less about discovering something new than remembering something fundamental. It reminds us that the simplest things, honoured daily, build the strongest foundations. This is the heart of Mastering the Art of Living: not grand gestures, but faithful, intelligent habits practised in community, over a lifetime.

Drink. Not because water is a cure for everything. But because sometimes honouring life begins by giving the body what life has always required.

An Invitation to You

Water sustains the body. Community sustains the spirit. Together, they form the foundation of a life lived in harmony with nature's design. As we continue to Master the Art of Living, we do so one glass, one meal, one faithful day at a time.

If you are a Life Seeker, drawn to plant-based living and to wisdom that has been tested across generations, we warmly invite you to begin with a drink of water. Start tomorrow morning. Drink a glass of water before anything else, and notice what you feel. Also visit us at our Village of Peace Dimona Channel (video on YouTube) to learn more about Water is Medicine.
