Here in the Village of Peace Dimona, we cherish the vibrant spirit of our youth, knowing they are the torchbearers of our heritage and future. Every two years, we proudly host the International Youth on the Move Conference, a profound cultural celebration where youth, ages 13-18, from Israel, Africa, the United States, the United Kingdom, and beyond, gather for two weeks of transformative experiences. As a community, we witness the unforgettable excitement and the ever-lasting bonds of friendship that blossom among these young hearts. This year, we're delighted to share a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the magic of this powerful gathering.
## A Warm Welcome Home The anticipation for the International Youth on the Move Conference is palpable throughout our community, especially among the youth in Israel who eagerly await the return of their international friends. Regardless of the hour, whether morning, afternoon, or the wee hours of the night, the youth from “Home” warmly greet their arriving guests at the Village of Peace. The heartfelt hugs and cheers of joy exchanged speak volumes of the profound love and deep connection these youth share, a testament to the extended family spirit that defines us.
Many of our international youth have been here before, making each reunion a joyous occasion. Some guests find accommodation in the village's guest house, while others are lovingly hosted in the homes of our community members. These evenings often extend late, filled with shared stories, laughter, and the precious opportunity for youth to catch up on each other's lives, strengthening their global bonds.
In preparation for the conference activities, our youth engage in heartwarming exchanges. They share clothes, style each other's hair, and embark on shopping excursions, all while getting ready together in the homes of their friends. It is truly inspiring to witness the sincere and innocent ways these youngsters relate to one another, building bridges of understanding and affection across cultures.
## A Journey of Cultural Enrichment The summer 2024 itinerary for this fascinating event was meticulously crafted to provide a rich tapestry of cultural and spiritual enrichment. Each activity was designed to deepen their understanding of our African Hebrew Israelite heritage and empower them in their journey of Mastering the Art of Living. The experiences offered ranged from sacred moments to vibrant celebrations, fostering both introspection and joyful expression.
The diverse programme included: - A sacred prayer in white, symbolising purity and unity. - Artistic workshops of various sorts, encouraging creative expression. - Seminars on Hebrew Israelite culture, deepening their knowledge and identity. - Meaningful work at the community agricultural project, connecting them to the land and sustainable living. - A powerful Biblical, theatrical production, bringing ancient wisdom to life. - A vibrant Cultural Extravaganza fashion show, highlighting the majestic dress of the Biblical ancients. - A five-day tour of the historic Sea of Galilee area, connecting them to the sacred land.
## Exploring the Land of Israel For our international youth, the Village of Peace offers a unique sense of reprieve, a safe haven where they can enjoy extended hours outdoors without the apprehension of danger. They are welcomed into the homes of their friends in Israel, experiencing the profound warmth of an extended family. This feeling of being truly at home allows them to fully immerse themselves in the awe-inspiring beauty and history of the land.
The anticipation for the five-day excursion was electrifying, with many youth staying up all night to pack and socialize, playfully declaring they would catch up on sleep on the bus. Unlike many youth trips in Israel that focus solely on land excursions, this journey offered a diverse experience. En route to Yar Levi, their campsite near Tiberias, they embarked on a beautiful nature trail in the Rothchild Garden in Zecron Yaacov, marveling at the natural splendor.
During their time exploring the land, our youth engaged with its ancient spirit. They experienced the profound blessing of swimming in the Jordan River, a dream for many, and explored ancient caves, feeling the echoes of history. Settling into the campsite, they slept in tents and learned collective responsibility by being placed on different teams for meal preparations and maintaining campsite order. The immersive trip concluded with a joyful day at a large water park, a perfect blend of adventure and fun.
## Voices of Our Youth The impact of the International Youth on the Move Conference is best captured through the voices of those who experienced it firsthand. Kani Ben Ahkisamakh, a 17-year-old Hebrew Israelite youth from Atlanta, Georgia, shared his reflections on the 2024 conference, highlighting its transformative power. His words resonate with the spirit of discovery and connection that defines this biennial gathering.
Kani expressed, “This was a new experience where I met a lot of new people. I did a lot of dancing, and I normally don’t dance, but the conference brought that out of me. I learned some new words in Hebrew. They take the Shabbat very seriously here, and clean up for the Shabbat on Friday. The food was good, and the kalebone tasted different than what we have in Atlanta.” His testimonial beautifully illustrates the blend of cultural immersion, personal growth, and community life that our youth experience.
## An Extended Journey of Discovery Although the formal conference activities have concluded, the adventure for many of our international participants continues. Due to current events, most airlines have suspended air travel to the Holy Land, leading to an extended stay in Israel for our youth. This unforeseen circumstance has transformed their visit into an even deeper journey of discovery and resilience, allowing for prolonged cultural immersion and strengthened friendships. The International Youth on the Move Conference 2024 has truly proven to be a memorable event, characterized by tight bonds, profound discoveries, and countless good times, making it one for the records.
