Ubuntu teaches us that no one is complete in isolation. In the Village of Peace, we've discovered that community is not merely a place—it is a way of living.
There is an ancient African principle that reminds us of a verifiable truth the modern world has largely forgotten. Ubuntu: "I am because we are." It tells us that no one is complete in isolation — our humanity is discovered, developed, and expressed through one another. In much of today's world, independence is celebrated as the highest achievement, and we are taught to become self-made, self-sufficient, and self-reliant. Yet whilst personal responsibility is essential, there is another verifiable truth just as vital: we were created for community.
Ubuntu: I Am Because We Are
Family is the first place where we learn this lesson. In a healthy family, each member contributes according to their ability and receives according to their need. We celebrate together. We grieve together. We carry one another through seasons of strength and seasons of weakness. No one succeeds alone, and no one should struggle alone.
- true community extends that same spirit beyond the walls of one household. It takes the love and responsibility learned in the family and widens the circle until neighbours become kin and strangers become family.
Received by a Community
When I was expecting our little ones, I discovered what community truly meant. The women around me didn't simply offer congratulations — they quietly stepped into our lives. Meals appeared without asking. Experienced mothers shared wisdom that no book could teach. Someone was always available to hold a baby so I could rest, finish a task, or simply breathe for a moment. What could have been an overwhelming season became one of the richest experiences of my life because I was never carrying it alone.
- came to understand that whilst a new life is born into a family, that life is also received by a community. Every act of care told us: "Your joy is our joy, and your responsibility is ours as well."

Our youth grew up believing that every adult cared about them. Although they knew who their parents were, they also knew they belonged to a much larger family. If they needed a meal, a glass of water, encouragement, or guidance, they could knock on a neighbour's door with complete confidence that they would be welcomed. They learned that community was not an abstract idea — it was something they experienced every day.
Collective Responsibility, Individual Purpose
Collective responsibility does not diminish individual identity; it gives it purpose. Our unique gifts are not merely for personal fulfilment but for the well-being of the whole. When one person flourishes, everyone is strengthened. When one person suffers, everyone is called to respond.
This understanding transforms how we see our neighbours. They are no longer strangers who happen to share the same geography, but members of an extended family who share a common destiny.
Strong families become the foundation of strong communities. Strong communities become the foundation of healthy nations. The character of a civilisation is ultimately measured not by the wealth it accumulates, but by the quality of the relationships it cultivates.
The Early Village of Peace Community
The early Village of Peace community demonstrated this beautifully. Their willingness to hold "all things in common" was not simply an economic practice — it was the visible expression of hearts that had already become one family. Sharing was the fruit of belonging.
Over the years, I have watched this same spirit extend far beyond my own family. I've seen neighbours become grandparents to youth who were not biologically their own. I've watched young people grow up surrounded by many caring adults, each offering guidance, correction, encouragement, and love. During times of illness, loss, or financial hardship, people didn't wait to be asked — they simply showed up:
- Meals were prepared
- Youth were cared for
- Homes were cleaned
- Needs were quietly met
Our elders were never viewed as a burden. They remained treasured sources of wisdom, experience, and continuity, reminding each generation where we came from and what we were building together.
Those moments taught me something I have never forgotten: community is most visible not during celebrations, but during ordinary days and unexpected hardships. That is when family reveals itself.
People-to-People Ecology
Perhaps our greatest challenge today is not finding more resources, but rediscovering one another. In the Village of Peace, we often describe this as People-to-People Ecology — the intentional cultivation of healthy, life-giving relationships. It remains one of our highest priorities.
Ubuntu reminds us that every act of kindness strengthens the whole:
- Every meal shared
- Every youth mentored
- Every elder honoured
- Every burden carried together
Each of these helps build a culture where life flourishes.
Community as a Way of Living
Community is not merely a place.
It is a way of living. It is how we love. It is how we serve. It is how we discover who we were created to become.
Having lived in this way for many years, I have come to realise that the greatest wealth a community possesses is not its buildings, programmes, or resources. It is the confidence that someone will stand with you when life asks more of you than you can carry alone. That kind of security shapes our youth, strengthens partnerships, honours elders, and gives every individual the freedom to contribute their unique gifts because they know they are supported by something larger than themselves.
When we embrace one another as family, we begin building the kind of world future generations deserve — a world where every person has a place, every gift has purpose, and no one stands alone. In a world where loneliness has quietly become one of our greatest epidemics, genuine community may be one of the greatest gifts we can offer.
