For 50 plus years since the vision received in Chicago in 1966, and more than five decades of community life in the Negev Desert, we have been walking a path together: learning, refining, and passing what we learn from one generation to the next. Along the way, we have come to understand something simple and profound - a community without memory is a crowd, but a community with memory is a family. Memory becomes heritage. Heritage becomes legacy. And legacy is what we place in the hands of our youth and, increasingly, in the hands of the Life Seekers who find their way to our door. Memory Is a Living Practice, Not an Archive
In many places, memory is stored in books, museums, and photographs - honoured, but often untouched. In the Village of Peace, we have chosen a different approach. Our memory lives in daily practice. It lives in the morning glass of water that begins each day, in accordance with our understanding of water as medicine. It lives in the plant-based "Live-it" that has nourished three generations. It lives in the songs we sing together, in the way we greet our Treasured Elders, in the natural fibres our members wear, and in the gardens our young people tend.
When memory is practised rather than merely preserved, it does not fade. It deepens. Each time a grandmother teaches a granddaughter to prepare a meal from the earth's abundance, or a father walks with his son in the cool of the evening, the memory of why we live as we live is renewed and strengthened. This is intergenerational knowledge in its truest form: not information handed down, but a way of life handed forward.
Milestones Are Teachers, Not Just Markers
This year, as we commemorate 50 plus years since the vision and more than five decades of community life in Dimona, we have been reflecting on what milestones actually mean. A milestone is not simply a marker of time passed. It is an invitation to examine the journey. How did we arrive here? What did we learn in the difficult early years, when we were building in the desert with little more than vision, faith and resolve? What would we want those who come after us to know?
Under the founding vision of H.E. Ben Ammi Ben Israel, our community learned that every challenge carries instruction. The years of struggle taught us self-reliance. The years of growth taught us patience. The years of recognition taught us humility. When we gather to commemorate these milestones - whether as a full community or around a family table - we are not indulging in nostalgia. We are extracting the wisdom from our own experience and placing it, deliberately, into the hands of the next generation.
Heritage Is Alive in Dimona Today
We often say that our African Edenic heritage is not something behind us but something alive among us. You can hear it in the Songs of Deliverance, the music our community created to nourish the inner life rather than merely entertain. You can see it in the colours and patterns of our attire, in the Hebrew names carried by our youth, in the names of our sacred institutions, and in the rhythm of our festivals that harmonise with the seasons and the cycles of the earth.
Our heritage also lives in our relationship with the land itself. The soil we cultivate in harmony with nature - resting and renewing it, as we have done for decades - teaches our young people that caring for the earth and caring for the body are one continuous act. Food grown with honour nourishes a body that is, in essence, earth in another form. This understanding is perhaps the most treasured piece of our inheritance, and it is the one we most joyfully share.
What We Have Found
In our community, we have found that heritage is not preserved by buildings or ceremonies alone. It is preserved in every intentional, daily thought and act that chooses to employ the knowledge we have derived from every moment of our journey here. It is preserved in a conversation between generations. When elders speak and young people truly listen, something is transmitted that no book can hold. And we have found that a community which honours its past is far better equipped to shape its future, because it knows which principles were tested and proven, and which were merely fashionable and transitioned.
As Lisa Ludwig-Mackenzie writes in her article, Legacy Through the Ages: Why Living Your Story Matters Today, "Legacy is not built from material things. It is built from meaning. It is present in every act of kindness, every shared laugh and every moment of presence."
We have also found that memory must be generous. A legacy kept only for oneself is a treasure buried in the ground. A legacy shared becomes a gift to the world. This is why we open our homes, our lives, our institutions - and the stories held within each of these - to those who wish to learn.
